How Literacy Can Change A Life

“I became a MCLC student when my friend Emmett saw a notice on MCLC in the Pilot. He asked if I wanted to try reading again. I tried in 1997 but quit because it was boring. I want to learn because I like to travel and I can’t because I can’t read a road map and the road signs. Emmett would like me to help with gardening and painting around the house. He needs me to read cans and bags in the garage since it is hard for him to get downstairs. I believe MCLC is the best thing they ever started.”

“I have been studying English at the MCLC for 2 years. English was very difficult but I now have a better understanding of English. I like my class at MCLC because each student has an individual tutor. I also enjoy studying English using the computers.”

- Juan

“MCLC has helped me to improve my reading. I like coming to class to learn to read, write, and spell. I learned about MCLC from a church. I am glad I found out about MCLC, I look forward to learning with my tutor.”

- Elizabeth

“MCLC helps my reading and spelling. I find it easier to read and understand books. The MCLC offers me one-on-one tutoring. One-on-one is less distracting and less humiliating. I became a student after my mother read a story in the paper. She brought me to meet Pam.”

- Todd

“Before coming here I felt alone as a foreigner and I was afraid of American people. I met my tutor here. She treats me warmly and shows me how helpful Americans are. She helps me understand American life more than any others have done. I feel like she is my sister or my mom. Since I came here, my English is getting better. Now I am taking college classes and working.”

- Sung

“MCLC has helped me to understand English better. I can communicate better at my job. Now I can read the newspaper. I like to read the newspaper. When I go to the doctor, I understand what he tells me. I want to learn to communicate even better.”

- Hortencia

“Thank you for helping my English and many other people. I will be a good student.”

“When I went to the Moore County Literacy Council, my reading was very poor. My reading is pretty good now. The ladies are helpful at helping you to understand what you are doing. So, if you want to learn how to read and write the place to go is the Moore County Literacy Council for good help.

P.S. - And the ladies are nice.

- James

“My experience at MCLC is the most wonderful that I have had in this life. I have found a special place where everyone is very friendly. They help us unselfishly as we learn to speak, write and read English. If you want to learn, this is the best place to start. I have had a short time here, but I am very fond of them. I consider this place as my home. I appreciate the humility and goodness of my American friends. It’s really incredible. Day to day, this has motivated me to be the best person I can be.”

“I like my tutoring sessions at MCLC. Because they are helping me to learn how to write, read and speak English. I like being in MCLC because I fell comfortable like I am in my house. I appreciate my tutor’s time and patience in teaching me how to translate from Spanish to English. Thank you very much MCLC.”
