Our Mission: To Teach Moore People to Read
Moore County Literacy Council is a non-profit, volunteer based organization that offers free tutoring services to people functioning at low literacy levels.
In our 2006-2007 reporting year, we served 288 adults, up from 191 the year before. Adult programs include one-on-one tutoring, computer learning, family literacy groups, discussion groups, and tutoring assistance at other area institutions.
We also provide a homework help program for children of our adult students. Though we worked more extensively with children in the past, in recent years we have focused on services for adults, whose options for basic education and literacy assistance are very limited.
Volunteers are the heart of our program. Trained volunteers do all our tutoring and group facilitation, and many volunteers assist with office work, record keeping, board activities, and fundraising. In our last reporting year, we recorded 5800 hours of donated service.
Of our last year’s budget of just over $100,000, sixty percent of funds were raised through donations and fundraisers. The remainder came from foundations and grants from the North Carolina Community College System, United Way, and Moore County.
